Q and A – KATE BURLEY
What motivates you?
My main motivation is making my whānau proud, as I genuinely would not be here if it wasn’t for their support (as cliche as that sounds) they are my sounding board, there for me through the highs and lows, are ALWAYS my biggest fans in the crowd no matter where we play in NZ. I’m very grateful.
Do you have a pregame routine?
I don’t exactly have a routine but I like to have a cold shower to freshen up!
What’s your favourite music to listen to pregame?
I listen to a little bit of everything on game day! Start off listening to slow jams and singalongs on the way to captain’s run and slowly build up to pump up music and some rap pre-game!
How do you overcome pressure and stress on game days?
I like to visualise what I want to do in the game over and over! Also I try not to get too caught up in the pressure or stress, I play at my best when I’m enjoying it and am fully present in the moment!
How have you been enjoying your netball with your new team?
I’ve been absolutely loving it! Trainings have been very tough but even more rewarding! I’ve been learning new skills and have been working on my weaknesses. I love how everyone in our team keeps each other accountable, so there’s no slacking in our intensity at training! I’ve been soaking it all up, and slowly seeing changes in my game!
What does it mean to you to play your 50th game?
I’m very honoured to have the opportunity to play 50 matches! It means a lot to me to be able to play this game in front of so many special people in my life, who have supported me throughout this journey!
What on court goals have you set yourself for this year?
My main goal for this year was to improve my 1 on 1 game, so really getting into the GA and putting that pressure on high! I still have a very long way to go but am enjoying the challenge!
If there are any kids out there suffering with pregame jitters what would you tell them?
Nerves or pregame jitters are very normal! I still get nervous before our games, but you’ve just got to use those nerves to fuel you! Go out there and have fun, because at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about.
