MG MYSTICS FAREWELL GRACE NWEKE
The MG Mystics will farewell their star shooter Grace Nweke at the end of the 2024 season as she embarks on the next chapter of her netball journey with the NSW Swifts.
Nweke has signed with the NSW Swifts for 2025 and is set to make the move to Sydney for pre-season training after her current international netball commitments with Netball New Zealand are complete.
Having joined the Northern Mystics in 2019 as a 17 year old high school student, Grace has been an instrumental player and specialist goal shooter for the Mystics for the past six years, playing a crucial role in every one of the clubs three ANZ Premiership titles: 2021, 2023 & 2024.
Nweke said she was excited to make the move to the Swifts.
“Playing with the Swifts in Australia will provide me with new challenges and experiences that will further hone my skills and, ultimately, benefit my game at all levels,” she said.
“Getting the opportunity to be exposed to different playing styles and strategies, week in and week out, is really important for my development and I am honoured to have the chance to do this at a club as successful and storied as the Swifts.
“I am ready for a shake-up and a new journey and cannot wait to get started with the Swifts.
“I also would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone at the Northern Mystics for making me the player I am today. As a proud Aucklander it fills me with great pride to reflect on my individual and collective achievements at the Mystics and my growth over those six years, and I will be eternally grateful to everyone at the Club”.
MG Mystics Head Coach, Tia Winikerei says she is excited for Grace. “I have known Grace since she was at school and have had the privilege of working with her when she first came to the Mystics. She is Mystics whānau. This will always be home, and Grace has touched the hearts and minds of our team, club and fans.”
“Helene (former Mystics Head Coach) had the foresight to recruit Grace into the Mystics while she was still at school and collectively we have supported her development to be the athlete and netballer we all enjoy seeing today. I am humbled to have worked with her in the past six years and know it is time she has a new challenge”.
“While we are sad to see her leave, we are incredibly excited by the opportunity the NSW Swifts will provide her to be the best. We are yet to see the best of Grace, and this is exactly the shake up she needs to be the #1 Goal Shooter in the World”.
“Tonight, as a club, we will have the opportunity to celebrate this with her at our End of Season Awards”.
